NJWC - Advocates for Children 2020 State Creativity Winner-

Picture

GFWC Northboro Junior Woman's Club (NJWC) pleased to receive the "2020 State Creativity Winner ~ Advocates for Children"
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the GFWC Northboro Junior Woman’s Club had to get creative and resourceful to hold its annual Foster Care Holiday Party in 2020. Twenty-five foster families served by the Framingham DCF (with a total of 61 children) responded to an emailed invitation inviting them to a Virtual Holiday Party. Toy collections were held in 4 locations and an Amazon wish list was shared on social media.

With so many unexpected donations each foster child received 6 gifts. NJWC’s usual member wrapping “party” could not take place so the gifts were sorted, “shopped” and wrapped by two members and their daughters. Leftover toys were donated to Donations for Dignity, a foster care closet for foster families.

• Twelve “elves” set out to 9 different towns on a rainy Saturday to deliver Santa’s bags. Families signed onto Zoom at a designated time and the party began. Holiday songs were sung, Santa arrived and spoke with all the guests, and then the parents brought out the bags of gifts that had been delivered.

• Each family received a cocoa and craft bag to enjoy after seeing Santa. Cookie decorating kits donated by a local bakery and two different crafts were put in the bag for each child along with a handwritten note and a $50 Target gift card for the foster parents.

The holidays are hard for most foster children; add in the pandemic and many were really struggling with extra stress and anxiety. This Virtual Holiday Ho Ho Ho brought a little happiness and levity to the children as well as to their foster parents.

Recycling Resources

NJWC sponsors town-wide Styrofoam recycling twice a year. We are also dedicated to support recycling beyond the paper, cans and bottles that can be recycled as part of the town trash pickup. To that end, we are compiling a list of resources to assist the community in recycling other items. Click here to see a list of other recyclable items and where they can be reprocessed or re-utilized. We would appreciate everyone’s assistance in keeping this resource up to date.

If you have information on additional resources or something we have listed is no longer in operation,
please email us at info@northborojuniors.org.

Together we can make a difference! For the list of Recycling Resources please click here

100th Anniversary Of The Passage of 19th Amendment

In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote, GFWC Northboro Junior Woman’s Club will be holding a celebration on the Town Common, Northborough, MA on Saturday, August 22nd, from 10:00AM – 1:00PM (rain date August 29th).

You will hear from members who are dressed in period attire recite speeches originally spoken by Suffragists like Alice Paul, Ida Wells and Lucy Burns. Information will be available about the history of the movement and those who paved the way for a woman’s right to vote.  You will also be able to learn about Suffrage 100 (based in Newton), Occoquan Workhouse Prison, and the Turning Point Suffragist Memorial in Virginia.
